When a fabric store goes out of business and clears out their inventory, what do you do? Run over there and buy, buy, buy. That’s definitely what happened here and my adooooorrrrrable grandchildren reaped the benefits! I wanted to share this pattern with you, giving it a huge thumbs up. Perfect fitting can be a problem for all sewists–even for children’s designs. However, I found this pattern to be the (almost) perfect fit and the directions were very easy to follow. It also includes a pattern for a matching 18″ doll dress–very cute! I’ll fill you in on a few of the details.

To make the dress you will need:

  • Pattern from Olive Ann Designs (www.oliveanndesigns.com) entitled “Butterscotch” #OAD81
  • 1/2 yd. (3/4″ wide) elastic
  • 1 3/8 yd. fabric for main body (child size 4) You may need a few extra inches to lengthen. See below in observation #1.
  • 3/8 yd. fabric for contrasting bows
  • Typical sewing tools: sewing machine, thread, iron

Since this is a pattern review, I won’t go into extreme detail, but I will give a few of my observations on this delightful pattern.

1)Before cutting, be sure you like the length of the skirt portion on the child. I noticed on the front picture of the pattern that the girls’ dresses were a tad short, so I adjusted the cutting accordingly to lengthen. I didn’t have my grandchild with me to check on this but I did lengthen based on what I saw in the picture. I’m glad I did.

2)I love the covered elastic straps in the dress. I did change the way I put mine in. At step 13 I pinned and basted the straps in place for the front bodice edge AND the back bodice edge, carefully making sure of placement so that when it all gets turned right side out, the straps are in the proper place. In the instructions, the straps are put on in a different manner in step 22.

3)At step 16, I sewed in the dress back elastic instead of waiting until step 26.

4)At step 37 make sure to tack the bow down well, including at the ends, to make sure it holds up to washing. (Don’t even ask me why I mention this!)

This is one of the best fitting dresses I have made for a little one. The instructions are clear and the results are a joy. Have fun!!
